Alibaba vs DHgate For Dropshipping In 2026: Which Is Better?
Stop losing money to fake factories. Learn the real math behind Alibaba’s hidden shipping fees and DHgate’s slow delivery, and how to get true factory prices.
If you want to start a dropshipping business in 2026, you need to buy products from China. Almost every beginner looks at two giant websites: Alibaba and AliExpress.
Both websites have the same parent company. Both have millions of products. But they are built for completely different types of buyers. If you choose the wrong website for your dropshipping store, you will lose a lot of money, your shipping will take 40 days, and your customers will ask for refunds.
In this simple guide, we will break down the real differences between Alibaba and AliExpress. We will look at the hidden shipping costs, the minimum order rules, and the danger of Chinese receipts in your packages.
(Tip: Both of these are public websites with middlemen. If you are already getting daily orders and want to skip the middlemen to get the real factory price, read our guide on how to find a Private Dropshipping Agent).
The biggest difference between these two websites is how many items you are allowed to buy at one time. In business, this is called MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity).
AliExpress is a store for normal shoppers. It is like the Chinese version of Amazon.
The Good: There is no minimum order. If a customer buys one dog toy from your Shopify store, you can go to AliExpress and buy exactly one dog toy. You put the customer’s address in, and the seller ships it.
The Bad: Because you are only buying one item, the price is higher. You are paying a “retail” price, not the true factory price.
Alibaba is a store for businesses. You are talking directly to factories or big trading companies.
The Good: The prices are extremely low.
The Bad: The factories do not want to sell one dog toy. They will tell you, “Our MOQ is 200 pieces.” You cannot use Alibaba for normal dropshipping if you do not have the money to buy 200 items at once and store them somewhere.
Many new dropshippers look at Alibaba, see a very low price, and get excited. But they forget to look at the shipping cost. Let’s do the math on a simple product, like a wireless charger.
Scenario A (AliExpress Pricing): You find the charger on AliExpress for $6. The shipping is $2 (using AliExpress Standard Shipping). Your total cost is $8. You sell it for $25 on your store. You make $17 profit. It is very simple.
Scenario B (Alibaba Pricing): You find the exact same charger on Alibaba. The price says $2! You think you will make a huge profit. But when you click “Buy 1 Piece” (if the seller allows it), Alibaba adds a $35 shipping fee. Why? Because Alibaba sellers usually use fast express companies like DHL or UPS. Now, your total cost is $37. You cannot sell a $25 charger if it costs you $37 to buy and ship.
The Truth: Alibaba is only cheaper if you buy a huge box of 500 chargers and ship them by a slow boat. For daily dropshipping, the AliExpress price + shipping is usually easier to manage.
If your shipping is slow, your dropshipping store will die. Customers in the US and UK expect their packages in a week. If they wait a month, they will leave 1-star reviews and report you to PayPal.
AliExpress sellers use very cheap shipping lines to save money.
They use methods like “Cainiao” or standard free shipping.
These packages often take 20 to 45 days to arrive.
Sometimes the tracking number stops working when the package leaves China. Your customer will email you every day asking, “Where is my order?” Shipping on Alibaba (Fast but Expensive) Alibaba factories do not like to send small, cheap packages.
If you buy bulk, you can ship by sea (takes 30 to 50 days).
If you want it fast, they use Air Express (DHL/FedEx). It arrives in 5 to 7 days, but it costs way too much money for small dropshipping orders.
This is the biggest problem with public platforms. You either pay too much for fast shipping, or you wait too long for cheap shipping.
When you dropship, you want the customer to think the product came from your brand, not from a cheap seller in China.
The AliExpress Danger: Most AliExpress sellers are just regular shops. When you buy from them, they often put their own Chinese business card, a Chinese receipt, or a paper saying “Please leave 5 stars on AliExpress” inside the box. When your customer opens the box, they see this. They realize you just bought it for cheap on AliExpress. They feel cheated and they never buy from your store again.
The Alibaba Advantage (If you buy in bulk): If you buy 500 pieces on Alibaba, the factory will listen to you. They will put your logo on the box. They will not put any Chinese papers inside. But again, you must buy 500 pieces.
AliExpress is Automatic: You rarely need to talk to the seller. You use an app (like DSers or Oberlo), you click a button, you pay, and the order is done. If the product is broken, you click “Open Dispute” and the website computer gives you a refund. It is very easy for beginners.
Alibaba requires Talking: You cannot just click and buy. You must send a message to the factory. You have to ask them: “What is the exact shipping cost? Can you put my logo on it? How many days to make it?” Because of the time difference and language barrier, it can take 3 days just to finish one order.
Choose AliExpress If:
You are a complete beginner.
You are testing new products to see if your Facebook ads work.
You only get 1 or 2 orders a day.
You have zero dollars to buy inventory.
Choose Alibaba If:
You want to stop dropshipping and start buying products in bulk to send to a warehouse in your country.
You want to build a real brand with custom packaging and logos.
Reading about different suppliers will not save your profit. Using a public platform like AliExpress is killing your store.
Scenario A (Using AliExpress): You find a winning product for $10. You spend $15 on Facebook ads to sell it for $30. But the AliExpress seller waits 7 days to ship it. Worse, they put a paper inside the box with Chinese words that says “Buy from us for $5.” Your customer sees it. They get angry, leave a 1-star review, and ask PayPal for a refund. You lose your ad money and your brand.
Scenario B (DailyFulfill Private Agent): We go directly to the real Chinese factory. We get the exact same product for $7 (30% cheaper than AliExpress). We check the quality. We do 100% Blind Dropshipping—NO Chinese words and NO cheap papers in the box. Just your product. We ship it in 6 to 9 days. You make $3 MORE pure cash on every order, and your customer stays yours.
